Standard ENStandard Specification for High-Strength Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Steel Core Wire for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Conductors, Steel Reinforced
Also Known As:
The ASTM B606/B606M-19 standard is a specification that outlines the requirements for high-strength zinc-coated (galvanized) steel core wire used in the manufacture of aluminum and aluminum-alloy conductors, steel reinforced. The wire described in this standard is used for mechanical reinforcement in overhead electrical conductors.
The steel core wire must be round and have a Class A zinc coating. The base metal used for the wire must be steel produced through the open-hearth, electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen process. The wire itself is cold drawn and then coated with zinc. Joints can be made at any stage of processing before the final cold drawing, using electric butt-weld or flash-welding methods.
Chemical analysis of the steel core wire is required to ensure it meets the specified composition requirements for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. The wire also needs to meet the tensile strength and elongation requirements, which are determined through a standard tensile test method. Additionally, the wire must pass wrap and adherence tests, demonstrating that it can be wrapped in a close helix without cracking or flaking.
