AS/NZS 1299:2009 (R2020) is a standard that specifies the requirements for explosion-protected three-phase restrained plugs and receptacles for use in mines and quarries with working voltages up to and including 3.3 kV. These plugs and receptacles are designed to be used with restricted earth-fault systems and are not intended to be coupled or uncoupled while the circuit is energized.

The standard covers two types of restrained plugs and receptacles. Type A is designed to allow compatibility and interconnection between plugs and receptacles from different manufacturers according to specified dimensions. Type B, on the other hand, is designed with dimensions that are not compatible with Type A, and cannot be plugged into or accept a Type A plug or receptacle under normal operation. However, the use of transition devices between Type A and Type B systems is permitted.

The standard also includes provisions for electrical and mechanical requirements, such as the provision of earthed phase barriers to protect against interphase faults. However, it does not specify fully detailed designs, and the requirements of AS/NZS 1747 should be taken into consideration during the design process.

The standard also addresses the concept of plug and receptacle discrimination, which aims to physically prevent the engagement of plugs and receptacles with different rated voltages or currents.

Appendix A provides a list of information that should be provided by the user during an enquiry or order, while Appendix C includes information that should be supplied by the designer or manufacturer. Typical examples of a plug and receptacle assembly, as well as a restrained back-to-back receptacle, are also shown in figures included in the standard.
